The Marriage Ref and Me

Last Thursday evening, I was uncontrollably laughing....the giggles just wouldn't stop and neither would the tears. Have you ever done that? Laughed so hard that tears came to your eyes? Well, I was there. And why, you ask? My husband and I were watching "The Marriage Ref". Yep, that's right. "The Marriage Ref".

For those of you unfamilar with this television show, here's the rundown.

- A married couple have a disagreement that needs to be resolved.

- The "Host" or "Marriage Ref" of the show must decide who the winner of the disagreement is.

- He has three guest celebrities to help him decide... like advisers to the president, if you will.

- After the Ref calls a winner, the loser must admit defeat and in the end the couple wins a vacation package.

So that's the skinny. As you can imagine, the disagreements these couples have (and are willing to share with the world on television) are anywhere from simple to very complex issues. One husband was annoyed that his wife flossed her teeth in their bed at night before bedtime. He won the war in that one. In another senerio, a wife was hurt that her husband of over 14 years was still going to his mom for advice and not her. The man definately lost that battle. (Well, according to the "Marrige Ref", he did.)

After the hour long giggle-fest had ended, I sat there thinking to myself how silly it was... these people, some of them in marriages that have lasted decades, were still fighting about the same things, never once standing down from their opinions. And that's when the giggling stopped.

I looked over at my eternal sweetie and said, "I am so glad we don't have to go on a game show to resolve our issues." He smiled.

Now, it must be said that my marriage has neither been nor will be in this life anywhere close to "perfection". We've had our fair share of issues, and over the years we've resolved them one way or another. But the resolutions that have been the most eternally satisfying have been the ones where we've involved our own personal marriage Ref - the Savior. He knows us so much better than any two bit comedian hired by Jerry Seinfeld out there. He has been there for us from the beginning. And when we knelt across the alter from each other in the house of the Lord, He too was right there with us - the third leg to our lil' stool, keeping our marriage solid and strong.

Who needs a panel of over paid celebrities to solve matters of the heart when you have the Lord there who knows our hearts inside and out?

A paid vacation for two is nice, but it doesn't come close to an eternity of happiness with your best friend.

All in all, will I watch "The Marriage Ref" again? Probably. More importantly, will I watch my own marriage and make sure we're not letting any disagreement come between our goal of exaltation? Without a doubt, yes!
