Every fall I uproot the last, sad, vestiges of our garden, happy to simply erase the "learning moments" and throw them in the compost pile (or trash can, if the learning moments resulted in some sort of plant disease.)
So why do I spent every December madly ordering books from the library, poring over seed and nursery catalogs, and making massive "planting schedule" spreadsheets? (Yes, spreadsheets: I'm an accountant, we like spreadsheets. A lot.)
This December was no different- I compared notes from gardeners all over the country on planting schedules, devouring information on "companion planting" (did you know that onions will stop beans from germinating??), and dreaming of home grown edibles.
If you're planning on putting in a garden this year, now is the time to plan!
"Cole" crops (like cabbages, cauliflower, broccoli, brussels sprouts, etc.) can be started indoors about 11 weeks before the last frost date, which means I'll be planting seeds the first week of February, and with our mild Pacific NW springs I can live dangerously and plant the first peas a few weeks later!
Are you growing anything this year?
