I love gardening. I love planting things and watching them grow over time. And I'll admit it, I get attached to them. It's almost sad that they have to be eaten, but not that sad.
This year we are gardening the REAL way, with trenches instead of just random veggies everywhere. I have come to learn that this layout has quite a purpose. We soak the baby plants with a trench on either side, so that the roots are fed deeply and thoroughly.
Upon reflection I have found that the structure of families is similar to this method of gardening. Think of the plant as the child, with two loving parents (trenches) on either side helping it to grow. I love that the structure of families (ideally) is: two parents with the same goals, i.e.; supporting, loving, and teaching their children. I believe that the framework of a family can have a great effect on the success of a child.
Likewise, extended family and close friends can also be a second trench. Their role is extremely important. Children need secondary support which can be found from grandparents, aunts, uncles, neighbors, etc. Such relationships can be invaluable to a family!
I am grateful for the divine structure of families. I am grateful that God loves us enough to give us a pattern to follow. I know that if we follow the teachings of the church while exercising faith we will be blessed. Not that life will be easier, but that we will have the tools we need, and the spirit in our home to help raise our families.
