As I thought about my own agenda today, the thought came to me that there are agenda's all around us. If we do not prioritize in our own lives, there will be those around us that will prioritize for us, and it will probably not be the priorities we would choose for ourselves. There are many other things that surround us and cry for our attention and I realize how easy it would be to follow the wrong agenda simply by losing track of my own. I wonder what changes we might make in our lives if every time we made a choice, we would simply ask ourselves: Whose agenda is this supporting?
Think about it for a moment and lets take some seemingly "little" things.
Whose agenda are we supporting if we:
- Whine and complain about what is happening to us, but don't do anything to try and change it.
- Take offense at anything and everything
- Lie a little.
- Cheat a little.
- Be a little unkind.
- Dress immodestly.
- Be in the world AND of the world
- Blame and criticize.
- Focus on the mistakes that others make.
- Justify our sins.
- Be cruel.
- Hold a grudge.
- Fail to acknowledge the Lord's hand in every aspect of your life.
As a Latter-day Saint, we have unique opportunities that the Lord has provided for us. We have the freedom to develop our own unique talents and abilities in many different ways, but with that freedom comes the responsibility for each and every one of us to put aside the agendas of the world, and find and follow the agenda that our loving Heavenly Father has laid out for us.
Heavenly Father wants us to have true joy. Joy happens when we follow the commandments and are ready to do what the Lord needs us to do. Joy happens when we are more like Him.
How different would our lives be if we simply asked ourselves, before every decision,
Whose agenda is this anyway?
