"Are you listening, Mommy?"
I read an article recently about putting down personal electronic devices when we're with our children. Are we listening? Are we conversing? Or are we on our phones and saying, "Uh-huh. Sure, Honey. Yup." ?
It was a bit of a wake up call for me.
I spend pretty much all day every day with my children. We home school and spend very little time apart.
But, am I WITH my children when I'm WITH my children.
My answer? Sometimes yes. And... sometimes, no.
I started to wonder which moments I had missed because I was on Facebook. Do my children just expect my face to be glued to my smart phone? I was worried that this was the case.
So, now, I'm trying to be more present with my children. I'm trying to panic less when I set my phone aside for a while. I am trying to look at them when they are speaking. I'm attempting to connect with them more and less with my apps.
Frankly, it's dang hard.
But I'm trying. I'm far from "unplugged" but I'm trying.
And isn't that what we do as mothers? Try. Fail. Kiss their little sleeping heads and try again tomorrow.
Every day.
