In Everything Give Thanks

Doctrine and Covenants 98:1 says, "Verily I say unto you my friends, fear not, let your hearts be comforted; yea, rejoice evermore, and in everything give thanks;"

Thanksgiving is my second favorite holiday (I can't help it, I love Christmas!). I feel strongly that Thanksgiving gets the shaft in a lot of ways because it's become so overshadowed by zealous consumerism and the joy that is Christmas.

Because I love it dearly, though, we spend the month of November focusing on our blessings. I've seen many ideas floating around Pinterest as ways to count your blessings throughout the month, and I'd like to add ours, that has been tradition for many years.

Meet Tom Turkey:

It's simple: each night as we do our scripture study and family prayer, we take a moment to discuss what each of us is thankful for. We write it on a construction paper feather and add it to Tom's tail. By Thanksgiving his tail is glorious to behold, bursting with layers of blessings.

Tom has been a part of our lives for several years, and each year, our blessings seem to multiply.

To make Tom, I simply found a clip art Turkey I liked and copied it by hand onto poster board and lamented him with clear contact paper. Then each year, we cut out new feathers for Family Home Evening, the first Monday of November. We just use regular old masking tape to keep the tail feathers up.

When, the day after Thanksgiving, when I put away the decorations and make way for Christmas I stick a few choice feathers in the box with Tom, to see in a year, smile, and remember how incredibly blessed I really am.

Do you have a way to count your family's blessings throughout the month? If not I encourage you to start now! It's not too late.
