Sugar Cookies
by Amy Dotson
1 pound butter
3 eggs
2 cups sugar
2 tsp. vanilla
2 tsp. lemon juice
Beat together and then add:
6 cups flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
Chill and then roll out and cut; or roll in waxed paper in long rolls, chill and slice. Bake on ungreased baking sheet at 350 degrees for 10 minutes or until edges are barely beginning to brown. Top with your favorite vanilla or flavored frosting or glaze. And don't forget the sprinkles!
One of the main reasons I love this recipe, besides that fact that it tasted fantastic, is its history. The sweet woman it originated from lived on the street my mom grew-up on. My grandmother loved and used this recipe. My own mother loves and uses this recipe. And now I love and use this recipe. I love food that is generational and brings a family together. I love that when I make these cookies with my girls, I will tell them stories about standing on a stool in my grandmother's house, helping her roll out the chilled, sweet dough. So many of my favorite childhood memories come from that kitchen.
So, when I am helping my girls make this recipe, I will invite my mom to join us and we will invite my grandma for a quick visit from heaven to make sure we get it just right.
