The Climb

Many years ago, when I was much younger and more limber, I used to climb cliffs for fun. My favorite type of climbing was face climbing. This is accomplished by having the ropes and gear necessary to be safe, looking for a crack that runs along the face of a cliff and putting your fingertips and toes into that crack, grasping with all your might and then pushing off with your legs and climbing the long, difficult journey to the top.

Sometimes, the climb would be so difficult, that I would slip from the crack and fall onto the rope where I would swing in the air until I could get my fingers into the crack again and continue onward. Most of the time, my fingertips and knuckles (and even my knees and elbows) would be scrapped and bleeding from the rocks long before I was done. I would arrive at the top, bruised, out of breath, heart racing, and completely relieved that I had made it at last.  I would also experience a sense of joy in the accomplishment of such a difficult challenge.

Today, I might not clutch at the edge of real cliffs anymore, I don't put this body in brightly colored spandex and a harness.  However, the metaphorical cliffs and less physical ones seem to abound and still manage to exhaust me in my efforts to climb.
I grasp at hope each inch of the way. I clutch at friendship to help me on my journey, I grip love and hold it tight so that I might not forget what is best and good in this world. I cling to faith that all things will somehow work out and most of all, I hold on to trust. Trust in His vision for what I need. Trust in His knowledge of what is to come. Trust in His ability to catch me as I let go and fall into His ever reaching grasp.
In my life I have learned that He is the rope of safety that I lean on.  He is the anchor in the darkness and the balm to my soul.  He is the Joy I need to get through my own difficult challenges.  He gives us everything we need to get home to Him.  All we need to do is climb.
